Welcome to the great Indian facade of gender equality!!

9 July 2010 No Comment

A few days ago, I got to know a female friend was involuntarily examined with the hands of a predatory male. An uncouth and simple way to describe is that she was groped. And the details- where? when? In broad daylight and no, not in an alley…but at the Indian Embassy in the tiny island of Bahrain. The next question- What was she wearing?? Did she ask for it?? Really, do you really want to piss us off—-When she took it to the embassy authorities, they made her stand in a corner and….(long silence) and then, infuriated not just with a sense of injustice but also, with that of being victimised- she left…

But what happened? Well, with the power of the pen, she wrote a letter to the Gulf Daily News (http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?srch=1&storyid=280805) asking for a ladies line in all seriousness and with a huge drop of indignance. What ensued were letters from the general public sympathising with her like the expat mum (http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?srch=1&storyid=281486). Of course, there were answers that provided patronage to the men’s right to leer and get all touchy-feely with women, and we have to bear the consequences (http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?srch=1&storyid=281275).  This definitely got the pot boiling (http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?srch=1&storyid=281723). What did she get from the embassy? Hold your horses, here it is – http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?srch=1&storyid=281617….

the sexual middle ages?!

So, what does this tell you? If you are sexually transgressed upon, it must be because you are rich and find it demeaning to stand in a queue of ‘asians’… Is this making sense to you?? How does ethnicity and income figure into this? FULL STOP, what did the violated lady ask for?? a line for women!! and why? so that she and many like her don’t get a body check…and what did the embassy say? Nope, can’t do a line- you should have come early and figured it out, you think you are better than us,  what happened to you has happened to you,we cannot help you, you have one big fat ego for complaining ….right, do you smell an apology anywhere? a remote sense of shame for an act that happened on the ground of ‘indian representation’? What you do get is the classic case of Indian PR strategy i.e. “Lets turn this problem into everything that it is not”…

As any Indian( /Asian) woman would know, we come with a long history of being put in the corner- body parts being pinched, our asses being felt…And we hide our face in shame- and are taught to take our place in that corner. Only this time, I and few others will not keep quiet…The Indian Embassy ‘gave permission’ to all those predators but WE did not…

Its time for some noise- a silent storm is brewing…

Watch this space…
